History
- The Rottweiler is one of the oldest breeds. Its origin goes back to the Roman times. There, he was used as shepherds and cattle dog. They marched with the Roman legions across the Alps, protecting the people and driving their cattle.
- In the region of Rottweil, these dogs came together with other dogs and mixing took place. The main task of the Rottweiler was now the driving and guarding of the herds of cattle and the defense of their masters and their property. Of this town Rottweil he got his name: the "Rottweiler butcher's dog. The livestock dealers (butchers) bred this dog purely for performance and usability for work. In due of time he became an excellent cattle dog and was also used as a draft dog.
- When in the early twentieth century, various breeds were needed for police, the Rottweiler was amongst those tested. It soon appeared that the dog was highly suitable for the tasks set by police. In the year 1910 he was officially recognized as policedog.
- Because of his "common sense" and even humor is the Rottweiler not only an excellent guard dog but also a real family dog for which it is not necessary to perform. He is also a good companion to humans and is generally friendly towards other pets and a fun playmate for children.
